IOT, LoRa, and Solar-Powered Gateways
At Inscio Roofs, we often talk about IoT, data, connectivity via LoRa, and gateways.
You've probably thought to yourself: "What's all this about? Technical nonsense." Don't worry, we'll explain it to you step by step! In this blog, we'll explain why this technology is important for roofs and how it can help you detect problems faster and save costs.
What are IoT sensors?
IoT sensors, or Internet of Things sensors, are small battery-powered devices that collect data and send it to a network. Small pieces of electronics.
What is LoRa?
LoRa stands for Long Range and is a communication technology specially designed for devices. By choosing LoRa, these sensors use very little energy and have a very long battery life. Up to 20 years.
Why is a gateway important?
An important link in the system is the gateway. You can compare a gateway to the modem in your home. Just as your modem connects the devices in your home to the internet, a gateway connects sensors on the roof to a network and ensures that the measurement data is sent to our software for insight and signaling.
It's something you hardly think about until it stops working — and suddenly the children have no internet! Just as the modem is important for family fun, the gateway ensures the right data.
We provide insight in places where there was never any insight before! ‘Roofs are increasingly being used as living spaces (roof gardens), for installing PV panels, and for collecting and gradually draining rainwater (retention roofs). The roof is a found space. But that also leads to major risks.’
Gateways on the Roof: Electric or Solar Power?
We offer two types of gateways: mains-powered or solar-powered. Which variant we choose depends on the specific situation on the roof.
On mains power
If power is available on the roof or there is access to a technical room in the building close to the roof, we opt for a gateway connected to the mains power supply.
A solar-powered gateway
However, in many cases there is no power supply on the roof or there is no suitable technical room. In such situations, a Solar Gateway is the perfect solution. These gateways use solar energy and are designed to function completely autonomously, even in Dutch weather conditions.
A bit more expensive, but much less hassle.
Our IoT sensors and LoRa make your roof smarter. Problems are detected faster, allowing you to take action before they become bigger. Whether you are responsible for a single building or an entire portfolio, make roof management easier.
Is using sensors difficult?
No, it's not difficult. We take care of the technology, as a service, and our customers manage based on the data.
